A TIN is a unique number issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) that identifies each taxpayer. You need it for: filing income tax returns, bank accounts or loans, trade license renewal, visa and job applications, VAT registration, share investments, and accounting for tax deducted at source by employers. Getting one before you start is the smart move.

To register for e-TIN you need: a National ID (NID), a biometric-verified mobile SIM in your own name (OTP is sent there), and an active email address. If you have a business, you also provide the business name, address, and source of income. Applicants aged 18 or above can generally apply.

1. Visit NBR’s official portal secure.incometax.gov.bd. 2. Click New Registration or Register. 3. Enter your NID number and date of birth. 4. Fill in personal or business details. 5. After registration you can download your certificate anytime: log in to the portal, go to the TIN Certificate menu, click View/Download, then save the PDF and keep a printed copy. The digital copy is usually accepted for official work, though some institutions ask for a printout.

Banks, employers and institutions can verify the authenticity of a TIN — enter the TIN number in the portal’s Verify TIN/Check option to confirm it is valid. Checking your own TIN occasionally is also a good habit.

If your name, address, profession or income sources change, update your TIN records — wrong details cause trouble later with returns and tax matters. You can also view some TIN information by dialing *16001#. Use the portal’s correction option or your circle office for updates.
